The Unseen Architect: My Journey to Building Mythos and Modalities

Have you ever felt a tug towards something, a persistent curiosity that eventually reshapes your entire perspective? For me, that curiosity has always been about stories – not just what they say, but how they work. This fascination has been the driving force behind the creation and development of "Mythos and Modalities," my podcast dedicated to exploring the hidden blueprints of legend.

For years, my academic journey was a deep dive into the intricate machinery behind narratives. I wasn't content just to read a myth; I wanted to understand its underlying structure, its purpose, and how its various parts interconnected. This quest led me to the powerful lens of systems thinking. It's a way of looking at the world that goes beyond individual events, seeking to illuminate systemic problems by defining the root causes, as well as places to intervene for a desired outcome in the system. I learned to see that a system isn't just a collection of parts; it's a dynamic set of interconnecting relationships that organizes both tangible and intangible elements into a coherent pattern, all working to achieve a specific purpose or function over time. This framework became my intellectual compass, guiding me through the complex worlds of ancient epics.

The idea for "Mythos and Modalities" began to take shape as I realized that this systems approach wasn't just for academic papers; it was a way to unlock profound, relevant insights for a wider audience. I wanted to create a space for "curious minds and creative storytellers" who, like me, are eager to "go beyond the surface of ancient tales". The podcast aims to "dissect epic myths not just for their narratives, but for the intricate systems that drive them."

The "modalities" in our title were crucial to this vision. I recognized that no single perspective could fully capture the richness of these myths. So, "modalities" became our commitment to exploring narratives from "multiple angles, perspectives, and analytical frameworks." Whether it's examining the "modality of xenia" in The Odyssey, or looking at the "modality of heroism" or "human resilience," each offers a unique and valuable insight.

One of the most exciting aspects of this journey has been connecting these ancient blueprints to our modern world. Take, for instance, our recent episode on xenia in The Odyssey. We explored how the degradation of this ancient Greek guest-host relationship directly mirrors what systems thinkers call the tragedy of the commons. By analyzing reinforcing feedback loops (where unchecked self-interest amplifies problems, like the suitors' abuse of Odysseus's wealth ) and balancing feedback loops (the system's natural corrections, like divine retribution ), we see how these timeless lessons apply to contemporary challenges like Refugee and Immigration Crises and our Stewardship of Resources on Earth. It's about showing that embracing core values like generosity, respect, reciprocity, and mutual obligation can build more compassionate societies and foster a more sustainable relationship with our planet.

Launching this podcast has been an incredible journey of discovery, bringing together my academic passions with a desire to share these powerful insights. It's been about building a platform where we can collectively "explore the blueprint of legend" and discover how those insights can inspire your own creative work.
